My first post to my tumblr blog from TumbleBee on Windows Phone 7 #rainerbird #windowsphoneuk #tumblr
Windows Phone 7
Got a Windows 7 Phone last Friday and have spent some time getting it in sync with my Mac. I moved from iPhone 3G as was sick of always using a old phone, my contract was always up for renewal a few months before a new iPhone came out. With the 2 year contract with o2, I was stuck with that iPhone for 2 years.
Anyway onto Windows Phone stuff. First a few things you need to be aware of, that I wasn’t -
Contacts can only be synced from the Cloud
Hidden wifi networks can’t be used
No way of setting a manual IP on the wifi connection
If you run your Mac of AC (faulty battery and sick of replacing it), the connector software from Microsoft won’t update the phone, as it checks the battery capacity on the Mac
Email connectivity is not right
Contacts
Right so to get my contacts out of my address book and onto my Windows Phone I exported them onto my Desktop, then imported them into Google and applied a label (Telephone contacts). As I don’t really use contacts in Google, I deleted all other contacts and only kept “Telephone contacts”. I then imported them into my Windows Live account and finally this let me have them on my Windows Phone. I could have took them straight from Google to the Phone but didn’t want any new Google contacts to move across. The way I have it now all my telephone contacts are separate and stored in my Windows Live account.
Hidden SSID
This was easy, I just unhid it.
IP
I run my home network on manual IP’s, the reason for this is sometimes I have to open ports on my router for certain online gaming. I have now had to setup DHCP and have one IP in their, just for the Windows Phone. I do run WPA2 security and the phone does seem fine with that.
Phone Update
Not being able to update the phone was a problem, as I only have a Mac and it has a dead battery. I read though that if I was to connect my phone to a PC it wouldn’t be the primary machine and could attach it as a guest. I borrowed a friends PC, downloaded the Zune software and tried it. It worked perfectly, it already new I had synced elsewhere so didn’t overwrite anything. I updated the Windows software with no problems.
The email interface on the Windows Phone is nice, you can connect with Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and Exchange and you can also setup email accounts manually. But something is not right, the client and the server are never in sync no matter what I try. I login to Gmail on my Mac and it shows 2 emails unread, login on the Windows Phone and have none unread. Also when you delete emails (both in Gmail and my own domain) they don’t delete online. Am not sure what the problem is but it’s annoying.
So far am liking the phone, much faster than my iPhone 3G but that was 2 years old. I am still using my iPhone but without a SIM, so it’s more a iPod touch.
